Shannon Dodge

Shannon Comer Dodge, architect and owner of SCD Architecture

I'm Shannon Dodge, a licensed architect based in Erie, Colorado. I collaborate with business owners, builders and homeowners on everything from tenant improvements and changes of occupancy to new commercial buildings, residential communities, custom homes, additions and remodels.

I've been practicing architecture for nearly thirty years. I spent my first twelve working alongside my mentor, Donald Ratcliffe. After he passed in 2009, I started my own firm, Shannon Comer Architects, in Baltimore, and when we moved to Colorado, I hung out my shingle here as SCD Architecture. Some of my clients have been with me since the very beginning of my career, and most of my new work still comes from their referrals. That trust means more to me than anything.

My favorite part of the job is the puzzle: understanding what you need, working through the code, and finding a design that fits your goals and your space. I keep communication open, I leave my ego at the door, and I take the time to build good working relationships with the contractors and developers I work alongside, as well as the jurisdictions, plans reviewers and inspectors who review my work.

I have a real soft spot for small businesses. Opening a new location is a big step, and whenever I can, I'm happy to connect owners with the people who can help, from commercial brokers to local economic development resources.

I love working with homeowners, too. A home is personal, and whether it's a new custom home, an addition or a whole-house remodel, I take the time to understand how you live and what you're hoping for. I like to explore as many options as we can early on, so that by the time we move forward, you can feel confident in the direction we've chosen.

A client once told me about a conversation he had with a plans reviewer. "You're working with Shannon, right?" the reviewer asked. "You know she's the best architect within 500 miles." What meant the most was what he said next: my plans are thorough, and when there are comments, I address them quickly and completely so the next review is often the last one. That can save my clients time in permitting, and when you're waiting to open your doors or move in, time really is money.

I'm certainly not perfect, and there's always something new to learn. But I care deeply about getting the code right, paying attention to the details, and making the process as smooth as I can for my clients.

I've always believed that great collaboration can lead to a successful project, and a successful project makes us all look good.

All work shown on this website was done by or under the supervision of Shannon Comer Dodge.

However, some of the projects were contracted under Shannon Comer Architects, Inc. or Donald B. Ratcliffe, AIA and Associates, Inc.  Both firms have since closed their doors.

Some photos have been lightly edited for lighting, color, skies and temporary clutter; the architecture is shown as built.
